අපේ කතාව..

ශී‍්‍ර ලංකාවේ අතීත ගැමියන් දිවා කාලයේ දී ගොවිතැන සඳහා වෙහෙස මහන්සි වී සැන්දෑව ගෙවූයේ කණ්ඩායම් වශයෙන් එක්රැුස්ව විවිධ තොරතුරු කතා කරමින්ය. එම කතාබහ ට අතීත ජනකතා, ජනප‍්‍රවාද, ජාතක කතා, එක් එක් ගැමියනගේ අත්දැකීම් කතන්දර ආදිය ඇතුලත් විය. මෙම කතා එකිනෙකා අනෙක් අයට පැවසුවද ඒ අතුරෙන් ඉතා රසවත් ව අර්ථවත් ලෙසින් කතන්දර කියන්නෝ ද සිටියහ. ඔවුහු තම කතන්දර කියද්දී තැනට ඔබින ලෙස නොයෙක් කියුම් එක් කරමින් තම කතාව අලංකාර කළෝය. ඒ සඳහා තම ජීවිතයට සම්බන්ධ, තමා ඇසූ දුටු නොයෙක් සිදුවීම් උදාහරණයට ගනිමින් හා උපමා ලෙස ගනිමින් නව යෙදුමක් හෙළ බසට එක් කළහ. එම කියමන් ප‍්‍රස්ථාව පිරුලූ යැයි ව්‍යවහාර විය. ඔවුහු ඒවා පරපුරින් පරපුරට කට වහර තුළ පවත්වා ගෙන ආහ.

ඇත අතීතයේ අපේ මුතුන් මිත්තන් විසින් මෙසේ අවස්ථාවන්ට උචිතව යොදාගත් මෙම ප‍්‍රස්ථාව පිරුලූ වලින් බොහොමයකට පාදක වූ අපූරු කතාන්දර ද ඇත. අතීත ගැමියන් අතර ජීවත් වූ උගතුන්, බුද්ධිමතුන් , නොයෙක් තරාතිරම් වල නිලදරුවන් පමණක් නොව අඥාණයන් හා නූගත් ගැමියන් හට ද සිදුවූ විවිධ ජීවන සිදුවීම් මෙම කතාන්දර වල ඇතුලත්ය. එහෙත් එසේ බිහිවූ පිරුලකදී එම සිදුවීම ට අදාල කතාව අමතකව පිරුල පමණක් පසුකලෙක ඉතිරි වී ඇති අයුරු දැක ගැනීමට ඇත.

වත්මන් සමාජයේ ප‍්‍රස්ථාව පිරුලූ කියන්නන් එතරම් දක්නට නැතත්, අද වුවද පැරැුන්නෙකු හමුවූ විටෙක ඔහු සමග කෙරෙන සුලූ කතා බහක දී වුව ප‍්‍රස්ථාව පිරුලූ හත අටක් අසා දැනගත හැක. අද අප අතර පැරණි කතන්දර කියන්නන් අල්ප වන්නට හේතුව වන්නේ ඔවුනට එම කතා අසා දැනගන්නට වැඩිහිටියන් නොමැති වූ නිසා විය හැක.

එදා කුඩා දරුවකුට කතන්දරයක් කියන්නට සීයා හෝ ආච්චී සිටිය ද අද කුඩා දරුවන් තම දෙමාපියන් සමග ගමෙන් නගරයට සංක‍්‍රමණය”මෙන් සීයා හා ආච්චීගෙන් ඈත්ව සිටීම මෙයට ප‍්‍රධාන කරුණකි. එසේම වත්මන් බොහෝ සීය ලාද පැරණි කතන්දර දැන නොසිටීම තවත් හේතුවකි. ප‍්‍රස්ථාව පිරුළක් සෑදී ඇති ආකාරය විග‍්‍රහ කරමින් එයින් ගතහැකි ආදර්ශය විස්තර කර දීමට මනා දැනුමක් තිබිය යුතුය. හෙළයට උරුම වූ අපූරු ප‍්‍රස්ථාව පිරුලූ රැුසක් එය නිර්මාණය වන්නට පාදක වූ කතාන්දරය ද සමග මෙම වෙබ් අඩවියට ඇතුලත්ව ඇත. තවත් විස්තර..

Proverbs in Sri Lanka

Rural folk in Sri Lanka in the past got-together in groups discussing various topics after foiling in fields during day time. They discussed ancient folk tales, Jathaka stories, their experiences, etc. At the general discussions that took place, there were good story tellers who garnished their tales with various sayings suitable for the occasion. In the process they added a new feature to the Sinhala usage/dialect based on their personal experiences and various incidents that they have experienced in life. These subsequently came in to as PROVERBS.

These proverbs were carried by word of mouth from generation to generation. From time in immemorial own ancestors related excellent tales based on these proverbs. These tales and stories were not confined to the higher strata of society but also uneducated peasants and others of the lower strata of the society. Subsequently the experience behind the tales were forgotten and it is observed that only the proverbs remained.

I have been encouraged to create this website to give an opportunity to the present generation of children to familiarize themselves with these beautiful tales which are moving away from us. Today the internet is the most popular medium to exchange information. This prompted me to pave a way by my website to enable the Sri Lankan child to learn. I had to serch for the famous proverbs ans also the background that led to the birth of the proverbs. It has to be recorded with a tone of an elderly person .MORE..

English meanings of Sinhala Proverbs

අකලට පළගත් ගෙඩිය වාගෙයි - Like an unseasonable fruit.

අගේ ඉඳන් කණ කනවාලු - To feed on the ear whilst sitting on the horn.

අඩු කළේ දිය සෙලවෙයි - The water in a half-filled pot shakes.

අඞුව තියෙද්දි අත පුච්චාගත්තා වාගේ - To get the hand burnt whilst having pincers.

අනුන්ට කළදේ.. තමන්ට පලදේ..- What you do to others will bear fruit in you.

අන්ධයාට මොන පහන් එළියද.. - What is the use of lamp light to a blindman.

අඳුනන බල්ලො බුරනවා වාගේ - Like the barking of familiar dogs.

ඉස අල්ලන්ට නං පළමුවෙන් කකුල අල්ලන්ටලු - If you want to touch the head, first touch the foot.
